Project Description
City of Boulder staff wanted to understand the housing choices made by the city’s 60,000+ in-commuters—those who work within the City of Boulder, but live outside of City limits. Working with local employers, we surveyed more than 6,000 in-commuters and Boulder residents to explore their housing preferences, the tradeoffs residents are willing to make to live in Boulder, and the tradeoffs they are unwilling to make. The study findings were used to develop the framework for Boulder’s current Housing Strategy.
Year: 2013
Fun Fact
In-commuters and Boulder residents are strikingly similar. Both have similar age profiles (excluding students), racial and ethnic identities, and income profiles. The main difference? Housing preferences, with in-commuters preferring larger homes in a suburban setting.
